ARTIST STATEMENT
Diana turns wood into bowls on Stuart Island. Her mostly found wood is lathe-spun in a solar powered shop facing the Salish Sea. She hopes to create works that are useful, interesting and a pleasure to hold. Cracks, bark and beautiful grain are often included in each final form to tell something of a trees life. Sometimes she employs thin hardwood "ties" to help hold these elements together. The “ties” become lovely inlay and enliven the design. Her pieces have been shown at the Smithsonian Craft, Philadelphia Museum Craft and the American Craft Council Shows. She received the 2022 Wharton Esherick Award in Wood at the Philadelphia Museum Show. In 2024 she was given the American Association of Woodturners Excellence Award. The work is made solely by Diana; from the first chainsaw cut to the final finish.
