Alan MaGee - Departing and Returning: Tapestry, by Alan Magee, from Art is Not a Solace, 2024

Alan Magee: ART IS NOT A SOLACE

September 27 to December 2, 2024

Nichols Gallery

Alan Magee

Alan Magee’s images of stones, artist’s tools, pensive faces, and his visual allegories of creativity itself, come together through the medium of tapestry in the exhibition “Art is Not a Solace.” Woven in Belgium, Magee’s tapestries celebrate the wonders of nature, the role of quiet reflection, and the mysteries of human existence. The documentary Alan Magee: Art is Not a Solace by P. David Berez and David Wright presents an in-depth view of this major artist’s journey. (View film trailer below.)

During the FH Film Festival last October, SJIMA was given the opportunity to do a podcast called Painting of the Week with British filmmaker Phil Grabsky.

In town for the premiere of his film Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers, Grabsky attended a filmmakers reception at SJIMA and became enamored with the artwork on the walls by artist Alan Magee. He approached us about doing an interview for his podcast, featuring one of Magee's works, and we said yes!

Please take a listen as Wendy Smith, Assistant Director of SJIMA, talks with Phil about SJIMA, Alan Magee and her favorite artwork by Magee, titled Genesis." (Link below)
