THE ART AND POLITICS OF EATING

June 8 - September 11, 2023

I have long painted still lifes with food, capturing the sensuality of their shapes and their colors, the relationships and contrasts and spaces between those shapes and colors. The fruit, vegetables, and objects are like little people, each with its own personality and characteristics. Each defined by their space and surroundings.

I have also painted people with their food, producing it, preparing it, and consuming it. Surrounded by food, they become part of my still lifes. Then, fifteen years ago, I started making documentaries about food in order to explore how our food gets to our tables, showing the usually hidden backstories of the people and work that produce it. I'm now working on one about local food in the San Juan Islands, intending to frame each shot like a still life.
