Makah born 1948
Described as “an artist, fisherman, canoe company manager, poet and philosopher,” Greg Colfax has degrees from both Western Washington University and the University of Washington. He has taught in the Native American Studies Program at Evergreen State College as well as at elementary and high schools in Neah Bay, where he is considered a master carver. He began his training as a carver in 1978 under Art Thompson, George David, Steve Brown, and Loren White. Over the years he has received many commissions for original carvings, including a recent public art project for the city of Tukwila: a fifty-foot carved and painted cedar mural. Greg has researched the collections of multiple museums and is a consultant to Makah elders regarding the meaning and uses of art objects and utensils. He has completed many commissions for original carvings and is also known for his restoration of old pieces.
