Mathew Saviadjuk is the eldest of carver Joe Jaw’s four sons, all sculptors in their own right. A highly talented artist and capable hunter, Mathew concentrates on wildlife of the natural world and images from the spirit realm. He has been active as a community leader, having participated in the formation of Nunavut Territory and served as mayor of Cape Dorset. He has also played an essential role in supporting Inuit art and was a director for the West Baffin Cooperative for several years. Mathew has given voice to Cape Dorset artists of his generation and has been a key mentor for younger carvers in his community.
