“I was able to see the Gee’s Bend Quilts in person at an exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2005 and the following year, the collection of Eli Leon at the Figge Museum. Gee’s Bend quilts were among the first quilts I saw that were fundamentally shaped by an improvisational approach. I loved them, but was mystified about how they might actually have been constructed. Thru reading books, I develop techniques for improvisation in my work. “Wild Geese” was made with reference to a “score” from Wood’s book Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters. I enjoy the challenge of improvisational work, which is an intense combination of free-form play with intentional design decisions.”
