Red cedar, hair
A member of the Killer Whale Clan, Phil Gray creates his art in the traditional Tsimshian style. He began carving in 1998 with Salish artist Gerry Sheena and also had the opportunity early in his career to work with David Boxley, Henry Green, and Rick Adkins. Phil works primarily in red cedar, creating masks, paintings, panels, poles, sculptures, and drums. He has also studied Northwest Coast jewelry making under Kwakwaka’wakw/Haida artist Dan Wallace.
His art has been featured in public collections in Vancouver, Ontario, Seattle, and New York. In 2010, Phil designed the helmet of Olympic gold medal-winning Skeleton racer Jon Montgomery, who held the helmet throughout the awards ceremony. In 2014, Phil received a British Columbia Creative Achievement Award.
