Are you ready to explore your creative side in a fun, supportive environment? The San Juan Islands Museum of Art (SJIMA) is thrilled to introduce Kindling Creativity, a free adult art class series beginning February 27, 2025. Whether you're an experienced artist or a complete beginner, these hands-on classes offer a wonderful opportunity to experiment with various artistic techniques, relax, and take home a unique piece of your own creation.
With small class sizes and engaging projects, each class is designed to spark your imagination and connect you to your creative spirit. Led by artist and instructor Simona Burla, these bi-monthly sessions will explore watercolor, acrylic painting, mixed media, and collage in a welcoming and light-filled space.

📅 Kindling Creativity Class Schedule
Join us every other Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at SJIMA for inspiring, hands-on art sessions:
Relax while creating a colorful mandala using watercolors, drawing freehand and/or using stencils, then adding fine details with paint pens.
Connect with a sense of joy, creating a set of little cards inspiring you to engage in activities that bring you joy. Cards are collected in a jar and drawn for inspiration. Enjoy using watercolors, pencils, markers and pens on mixed media paper.
Explore the 7 chakras of the body, using the colors of the rainbow to create a wall hanging with acrylic paints, markers, and paint pens on watercolor paper, then assemble with yarn or string.
Create a whimsical booklet while connecting with your own core values. Enjoy using watercolors, pencils, markers, and paint pens on mixed media paper, then assemble with strips of silk.
Create a personalized deck of cards capturing your own wisdom and intuition, using acrylic paints, stencils, and paint pens on mixed media paper.
Draw and paint a mixed-media portrait that is an expression of you and of what you love, incorporating collage papers, acrylic paints, pencils, and paint pens on a canvas panel.
Create your very own journal to inspire a continued connection to your creative expression. Enjoy mixing and matching papers to use for your creative pleasure while decorating a cover for your art journal using a mixed media approach.

🎨 About the Instructor: Simona Burla
Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Simona Burla grew up surrounded by art and beauty. Her artistic journey began at Scuola D’arte, where she studied art history, drawing, painting, metalwork, and jewelry design. Now a longtime resident of San Juan Island, Simona has been a dedicated member of the local artist community for over 30 years, creating, teaching, and inspiring others.
Simona’s artwork spans multiple mediums, including wood, paper, canvas, and clay, with a particular love for acrylic and watercolor painting. She often incorporates mixed-media techniques such as collage, oil pastels, and handwritten text into her work. Her mission is to offer opportunities for self-discovery and reflection through creative exploration, helping others connect with their own artistic expression.
