The San Juan Islands Museum of Art (SJIMA) proudly presents Upper Left: Landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, an extraordinary exhibition by artist Andy Eccleshall. Open from March 7 through June 2, 2025, this collection of 26 stunning oil paintings in the Nichols Gallery captures the breathtaking beauty, atmosphere, and spirit of the Pacific Northwest.

Eccleshall’s large-scale works immerse viewers in the diverse landscapes of western Washington, from the dramatic coastal shores to tranquil farmlands and towering mountain ranges. His deep understanding of light, weather, and atmosphere allows him to create paintings that do more than depict a scene—they transport the viewer into it. With each brushstroke, he invites us to experience the wind rolling across a vast field, the weight of heavy rain on an overcast afternoon, and the golden glow of the sun breaking through thick clouds. His mastery of color and composition transforms familiar scenery into profound, emotive experiences, celebrating the ever-changing moods of the Northwest.
Born in the United Kingdom, Eccleshall has made the Pacific Northwest his home for more than two decades, and his connection to the landscape is evident in every painting. His ability to translate the region’s natural drama into sweeping, atmospheric compositions has earned him recognition as one of the area’s most compelling contemporary landscape painters.
Visitors to SJIMA will have the rare opportunity to experience Eccleshall’s world through his art, allowing them to pause, reflect, and appreciate the region’s extraordinary beauty from a fresh perspective.
About the Artist: Andy Eccleshall

Originally from Stafford, England, Andy Eccleshall began his artistic career at the young age of 16, specializing in architectural illustration and landscape painting. He later studied at the Exeter Faculty of Arts and Design, further refining his technique and deepening his passion for capturing the intricacies of nature and built environments.
After moving to the United States in 1994, Eccleshall was captivated by the vast and varied landscapes he encountered. His extensive travels shaped his artistic approach, leading him to develop a keen sensitivity to atmosphere, light, and weather. In 2000, he settled in Seattle, eventually making Edmonds, Washington, his permanent home in 2002.
Eccleshall’s paintings reflect his fascination with the power of nature—its moods, its drama, and its beauty. Whether depicting a stormy sky over Puget Sound or a misty morning in the foothills, his works offer a profound sense of place and an intimate connection to the land. He continues to paint full-time, drawing inspiration from the endless variety of the Pacific Northwest’s natural scenery.
