Visitor Guidelines

Here are some tips and guidelines to get the most out of your visit to IMA.

Store Your Belongings

Backpacks, suitcases, camera bags and large shopping bags are not allowed in the galleries.  Please place these items in the coatroom or check them with the docent staff while you tour the exhibitions.

Get Close, but Please Do Not Touch

While we encourage visitors to get up close to the artwork, we ask that you do not touch the art. Artworks are fragile, and natural oils, salts, moisture, and small particles on our hands can cause permanent damage. Please also refrain from leaning against walls.

Smoking and Alcoholic Beverages

Smoking is prohibited in the museum and within 25 feet of any entrance.  Illegal possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

Food and Drink

Food and drink items are not allowed in the galleries.  If you have a medical need to carry a water bottle, please see our Visitor Services staff for an exception.

Strollers are not allowed in the galleries. You may store them in the closet or check them with the docents.

Children are welcome in the galleries and we hope they have a wonderful experience; however, we require them to under the control and supervision of an adult at all times.

Please ask the staff is photography is permitted. The policies may change from artist to artist and from exhibition to exhibition.

Cell Phones

Please silence your cell phones while in the galleries, unless a special exhibit provides a special cell phone audio tour as part of the exhibition.

Possession of a weapon, even if legally carried, is strictly prohibited at the museum; an exception is made for law enforcement officers only.
